ABOUT COEBU UNIMAP


BACKGROUND

The Centre of Excellence for Biomass Utilization (CoEBU) was established in 2015. The purpose is to focus on research involving the utilization of biomass, since the location of the centre is in Perlis, where the main produce are paddy, sugarcane, mango farms and teakwood among others. The establishment is in line with the 11th Malaysia Plan (2016-2020), Strategy 4 which is to pursue green growth for sustainability and resilience. This centre of excellence is well planned in the interest to enhance research culture in combining chemical engineering, agriculture, bioprocessing, biosystems and others to convert waste to wealth.

OBJECTIVES

1. To focus on research excellence and be one of the leading biomass research centre in Malaysia.

2. To apply for local and international research grants according to the focus groups.

3. To produce postgraduates with the expertise in biomass utilization.

4. To produce R&D outputs such as new products, new process, prototypes, patents, journals, technical papers, books etc.

5. To be a centre for training in-house staff by organizing courses, workshops, seminars etc.

6. To be a consultant to solve industrial issues.

7. To generate income and be self-sustained in terms of monetary after 10 years of establishment.

8. To act as a free technical advisor to the farmers and young entrepreneurs in biomass industries as a community service.
